AMAXiMAL released TopMod 3D v3 on October 25, 2026, introducing a free, open-source tool for complex 3D modeling, generative design and 3D printing. The release integrates a Claude AI assistant while retaining topology-based modeling and adding modules that translate designs into fabrication steps.
A plywood module illustrates that connection between digital geometry and physical construction. It can divide arbitrary shapes into layered or interlocking components, addressing broken-surface problems in complex models with multiple holes. This gives the release a practical focus beyond creating shapes: preparing those shapes for fabrication.

For designers working with intricate geometry, the most immediate potential benefit is a closer connection between modeling and component preparation. If the fabrication modules preserve the intended geometry through decomposition, they could reduce the manual work needed to turn a complex form into parts that can be cut and assembled. The plywood workflow is a concrete example of this approach; its usefulness for a particular project will depend on the resulting components and how they fit together.
The Claude integration adds an AI assistance layer, but its presence alone does not establish how much of the design or manufacturing workflow can be automated. The practical questions are which modeling tasks the assistant can support and whether its output remains suitable for subsequent fabrication steps.
TopMod 3D v3 therefore brings two areas into focus: AI assistance during modeling and the conversion of complex geometry into manufacturable components. Further demonstrations of surface integrity, component fit and completed assemblies would help establish how reliably that connection works across different designs.
